Baptism

Maybe you’ve had a child recently and are thinking about the mysteries of life and want to give thanks. Maybe you want them ‘christened’ (baptised).

Perhaps an older child has begun asking questions and needs your support in their own baptism?

What if you’ve never been baptised and are considering this in later life?

Baptism is a celebration of knowing Jesus and seeking to know him, asking for the Holy Spirit to be with us and joining with the people of God in following his way.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I have a child I would like Christened…

This is wonderful news! Congratulations! It is worth thinking about if Baptism is the right thing for you and your family. There are some things we need to check (we need permission from everyone with parental responsibility). Download the Baptism Application Pack for more information.

I would like to be baptised

If you’re over 18 and have never been baptised, you can make the baptism promises for yourself. You can still have ‘sponsors’ instead of godparents who will help you in your journey of faith. Download our Baptism Application Pack.

I like the sound of it… I’m just not sure I believe it…

Baptism includes some key promises and statements of belief from both parents and godparents or the person being baptised if old enough.

If that feels like too much of a stretch -but you still grateful to God and want to say ‘thank you’ then a Thanksgiving service may be just the service for you. Download our Baptism Application Pack for more information.

I was baptised as a baby, can I be baptised again?

Being baptised is a ‘once in a lifetime’ event.

If you were baptised as a child and can’t remember it it’s understandable that you want to own those promises for yourself now you’re older.

In the Church of England this is known as Confirmation – where you confirm those promises once made on your behalf and take them on for yourself.

We would love to talk to you if this is the case for you.

Can I talk to someone?

Of course – it’s a lot to take in and sometimes it’s easier to talk it through.
